A forward deployment engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works embedded at the client, installing and adapting a product on the client's real systems until it runs in production. The role sits between product engineering and delivery: an FDE writes code, but success is measured differently. The client's operation has to run on what was installed.
The role exists because enterprise software fails at the last mile, and enterprise AI fails there harder. A model demo works everywhere; a working system has to survive one specific company: its data, its permissions, its legacy systems, its people. Someone senior has to stand where those collide. That is the forward deployment engineer.
